| A journey several yards down below the earth's surface through a narrow opening in the desert floor's surface, a slot like one finds in the top of a real piggybank, is an experience and a half for just about anyone. The climb down to the depths of the Lower Antelope Slot Canyon in Page, Arizona is at once treacherous, demanding, and highly rewarding. As photographer what is extremely challenging are the absence of light in most of the slot canyon's space, except for shafts of sunlight that slip through the crevices at, during and just after high noon, and my own reluctance to use artificial light sources for aethestic and environmental reasons. The image above and those below, including some taken in the far-easier-to-navigate Upper Antelope Slot Canyon where one walks in at ground level and meanders along the canyon floor, are my creative interpretations of what I saw on four different occasions. If you never get to climb below to a slot canyon I hope you will do so vicariously through my images. |
